But that the book found in a skip could perhaps be worth a fortune.

Sadly, however, for the owner it wasn’t a rare book and only worth around £50.

Other pieces brought along to the evening, which was held to raise funds for the new Mayfield Village Centre, did prove to be more valuable.

There were a pair of silver candlesticks that Michael valued at upwards of £3000, and the wooden clock pictured to the left of Michael is said to be worth between £500 and £600 and is French, probably from Northern France.

Amazingly, just like the experts on Antiques Roadshow, Michael can look at an antique and tell it’s heritage, where it was made, when it was made and often provide some extra fascinating tidbits of information.

And he shared lots of little anecdotes about the antiques on display but also about his life as a valuations expert with Sotheby’s:

As the evening showed, an antiques valuer never quite knows what he’ll be faced with.

And Michael backed this up with a story about a valuation he did when he pulled a porcelain bird from the bottom of a cupboard, followed by it’s matching pair only to discover that these two birds hidden away for years and years were actually worth more than £100,000.

The Chester Valuation Company is a well respected antiques valuation company and surprisingly in this time of recession, Michael is busier than usual as antique lovers rush to get their collections reappraised to ensure they’re not paying too much in premiums or to make sure that they’re not under-insured as items like jewellery, diamonds and gold have increased in value whereas some painters works have decreased in value while others have increased.

And if antiques collectors don’t have enough insurance and a mishap occurs they won’t get the full worth of their collections.

And that would be truly devastating – especially if you owned a very rare book found in a skip or a pair of £100,000 porcelain birds.

Coming Up:

December: A seasonal Charity Concert will be held in Mayfield’s St. Dunstans Church on December 5th at 7.30pm.

The Concert, sponsored by the Friends of Music in Mayfield, will feature Mayfield Festival Choir; St. Leonards-Mayfield Schola Cantorum; Skippers Hill Manor School, Senior Choir as well as superb soloists who will be announced at a later date.

The seasonal concert will include excerpts from Handel’s Messiah by the Choir, Missa Brevis-Britten performed by Schola Cantorum and a selection of songs by Skippers Hill.

Tickets cost £12 for centre seats, £8 for side aisle seats. Children aged under 13 are half price.

Tickets go on sale on 2nd November from Libra Book Shop or by post to: The Box Office, PO Box 324, Mayfield, TN20 6WA (with SAE). Cheques payable to the Friends of of Music in Mayfield.

All profits from this charity concert will be kindly donated to the Mayfield Village Centre.

February: Fundraisers for Mayfield Village Centre are hoping to host an incredible Winterfest Indoor Ice Skating rink for one week in February (this week should take in some of February half term) in the Memorial Hall. For this to go ahead we really need volunteers to come along and help man the rink.

We need First Aid certified helpers, people to help man the skate hire, ice marshals (so if you can ice skate this will be right up your street) and many more volunteers to help this event run smoothly. text-align: left;">We danced to Wham, Deelite, Duran Duran, S'Express, Guns n Roses, Tiffany all those greats. And as the night wore on and the alcohol took more of an effect on our limbs the dancing got wilder and looser. He wasn't the best breakdancer I've ever seen, but he tried and God loves a trier!

We even had an almost perfect and full remake of the Footloose theme tune dance from a young man, who I'm sure wasn't old enough to remember the movie or the song!

And would you believe it we had a visit from Slash himself!!! Yes the guitarist from Guns n Roses paid a visit to our wee 80s disco, where he stashed his guitar under the table while he imbibed quite a few cans of fosters - certainly living up to his image!

He took to the dancefloor only once that night - when the dj, in the great man's honour, played Sweet Child O Mine.

Accompanied only by his trusty guitar and a couple of adoring fans, Slash slowly shook his snake hips and strummed along to the song on the edge of the dancefloor more like a shy and retiring fan rather than a rock superstar legend.

Other fancy dress outfits included rara skirts, Live Aid t-shirts, lots of neon, jumper dresses, lots of colourful stillettos, batwing tops, doc martins, shoulder pads and legwarmers galore.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; word among locals.
And the locals loved the idea of a brand new village hall offering all the amazing facilities that the MVC will. They also loved the 80s music quiz.
Winners of the quiz were Kim Watson and Katherine Scott of the Mayfield’s Flower House who were the only ones to get a full score. Congratulations to them – they really know their 80s music!
While joint second place was taken by Jenny Waters and Dan Colbourne who both got a very good 13 out of 15.
Also at the Carnival Street Market the MVC 100 Club winners were announced and they were: 1st Mrs Lyn Willis, 2nd Mr & Mrs Ian Rutherford and 3rd Mrs Molly Stooks.
